Science and Scripture

I was recently challenged as to how techniques such as EFT, hypnosis, NLP, and others can be biblical or God-supported. It was a moment where I realized that some people may not view some of these techniques as being aligned with their religious beliefs.

The purpose of this post is to dispel any hesitations and clearly link together science and Scripture. But to be clear, this is not a post where I'm going to talk about creationism versus evolutionism.

I simply want to touch on how science and scripture are related and support each other. They are very much interlinked.

For example, when you look at the human body and all of the intricate systems from your circulatory system to your lymphatic system, your nervous system, your endocrine system, and all of the systems and how they all work in perfect harmony.

Looking at the science of things really demonstrates the true presence of a higher power in this world. When you look at things like the study of medicine, the natural world, chemistry, physics…they are very organized and very aligned, even if we don't understand everything quite yet. And in the Bible, even though the writers didn't know all the things that we know now about science, they knew enough to create references to multiple subject areas.

Overall, the Bible really emphasizes the importance of studying God's creation and looking at how everything works together. Believe it or not, there's Biblical support to areas like physics, astronomy, genetics, geology, meteorology, oceanography, epidemiology, pathology, ecology, sustainable agriculture, biology, zoology, and even the mind-body connection.

There are so many “-ologies” referenced in some way. In Biblical times, people were studying the constellations, in order to navigate ships and using the sky, so clearly they understood how unique the world was. Every star in the sky was unique.

That's all science is…it's explaining how God's design and how His creation works.

Here are some Bible verses to reference the mind-body connection.

Proverbs 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

This demonstrates how your mental health affects your physical health.

Proverbs 18:14 The human spirit can endure in sickness, but a crushed spirit, who can bear?

This demonstrates how we can push ourselves to move through whatever sickness or ailments we might have, but how much harder it is to make it through when your spirit has been crushed.

Here are three verses (of many) to support meditation.

Psalm 49:3 My mouth shall speak wisdom, the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.

This verse encourages meditation as the road to understanding different things in the world.

Or Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Lord, my rock and Redeemer.

This demonstrates that the words of your mouth and the meditation of your heart are very intertwined.

The final verse I'm going to give you in terms of meditation that you've probably heard is

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable. If there's any excellence, if there's anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (In other versions, I've seen this interpreted as “meditate on these things.”)

God wants us to take a look at the beauty of his world and really ponder, evaluate, and explore it.

There are plenty of examples and I'm telling you if you just run a Google search you will find so many more. Of course, the mind-body connection is my favorite between the two thoughts today with mind-body connection and meditation is

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the true will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

I don't think that you can say it any better than that.

I hope this has helped to shed some light on the links between science and Scripture and how they are supported in the Bible.
